Frequently Asked Questions

Why Should I Get a Lab Grown Diamond Ring?

Lab grown diamonds have burst on the scene and are popular because of their low price, despite being real diamonds and the fact that even experts cannot tell the difference.

  • Around 30% to 40% cheaper
  • Look the same as mined diamonds
  • Ethically sourced
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Good quality

From an ethical standpoint, customers know that their diamonds have not been sourced from war-torn countries or have been stolen, but instead have been created through technology processes and still contain diamond components.

Environmentally, they are processed in a way that is more eco-friendly and do not require the huge energy or heavy machinery used for mining traditional diamonds

What is The Difference Between Lab Grown Diamonds and Mined Diamonds?

Mined diamonds are the diamonds that we know and are accustomed to. They are formed a 100 miles under the ground at super hot temperatures and have developed under high pressure over a time period of 1 to 3 billion years. The long development process, the scarcity and beautiful sparkle make them a highly sought-after and expensive good. Lab grown diamonds, however, are made in a laboratory using advanced technological processes, involving high temperature and high pressure.

Otherwise known as mined diamonds, cultivated diamonds or synthetic diamonds – lab grown diamonds look and feel exactly the same as regular diamonds. Obviously, they are much cheaper to produce and buy and can be made in the UK or US, rather than penetrating the deep mines of rural Africa, Australia or Canada – so they are far more accessible to us.

Similarly, they pose lower risks to humans who cultivate the diamonds, with no requirement of mining hundreds of miles underground or laboured through coercion or political regimes. Hence, there is a huge ethical and environmental argument to use lab grown diamonds over ‘real minded diamonds.’

Are Lab Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds?

Yes, lab grown diamonds are very much real. The process starts with taking the seed or remnants of an original diamond and they use high pressure and high temperature to create the synthetic diamond in a lab. With moissanites or zirconias, it is a lot easier to tell that this is a not a real diamond.

However, with lab grown diamonds, the average person cannot tell due to the quality and refraction – and experts will require special equipment to be able to tell the difference.

How Are Lab Grown Diamonds Made?

A lab grown diamond starts with a seed or a flat slither of another diamond, so each gem is made up of real diamond. With two methods available, the one includes using a High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) system and the seed is exposed to high temperatures of 1,500C.

The other method, called Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD), involves putting the seed in a sealed chamber filled with carbon-rich gas and heating to around 800C. This grows a diamond carbon atom by atom.

Do Lab Grown Diamonds Rings Get Cloudy?

No, lab grown diamonds do not get cloudy and do not deteriorate with age. If your diamond ring is looking cloudy, it may just be time for a good jewellery cleaning.

Do Lab Grown Diamonds Change in Value Over Time?

Since lab grown diamonds are still new in their development, it is not fully certain whether they will dramatically go up in value or are appreciating in the same way as normal mined diamonds. However, this may be subject to change.

Should I Get My Lab Grown Diamond Insured?

Yes, absolutely. If you have a diamond on its own or part of an engagement ring or jewellery piece, you must get this insured, so the item can be replaced if it is lost or stolen.

Hatton Garden Diamond can provide you with a jewellery valuation and document for insurance purposes. This means that you have peace of mind when wearing your valuable jewellery at home or on holiday and you can show prove its value if it needs to be replaced.
