Creating a custom engagement ring is one of the most meaningful ways to mark a milestone in your relationship. It’s a process that combines personal preferences with professional craftsmanship, resulting in a piece that reflects not only your partner’s style but your shared story as a couple.
If you’re thinking about going down the bespoke route, one of the first questions you may ask is: ‘how long does it take to make a custom engagement ring?’ And just as importantly, ‘how far in advance should you start the journey?’
Let’s take a closer look at the steps involved in commissioning a bespoke engagement ring, how long each stage typically takes, and the best time to begin the process so that you’re proposal-ready when the special moment comes.
Why Choose A Custom Engagement Ring?
Whilst ready-to-wear designs offer convenience; a bespoke ring gives you the opportunity to create something that’s truly one-of-a-kind. Whether you’re incorporating meaningful details, or even using a family heirloom as inspiration, this path is all about creating something with intention.
At Hatton Garden Diamond, our team works closely with clients throughout the design and creation process, offering a range of options, as well as honest guidance to make sure that the result is a ring that feels just right.

The Bespoke Ring Timeline: From Idea To Reality
On average, making a bespoke engagement ring can take between 4 to 8 weeks. However, there are several factors that might extend or shorten the timeline depending on the complexity of the design and choices that you make during the consultation stage.
1. Initial Consultation and Design Brief (1–2 weeks)
The process usually begins with a design consultation. This is where you’ll share your ideas; whether that’s a detailed vision or a rough sketch, and discuss everything from preferred metals to diamond shapes, budget, and any sentimental elements you might like to include.
This stage can take up to two weeks, especially if you’re still weighing up your options. The more clarity you have on what you want before you begin, the quicker this part of the process tends to be.
If you don’t have any specific ideas in mind, that’s ok too! Our experienced team will be able to assist with suggestions based on your preferences.
2. Design Concept and Approval (1 week)
Once the brief is clear, the next step is transforming that vision into a concept. Many jewellers, including Hatton Garden Diamond, will provide 3D digital renders or sketches so that you can visualise the final piece before production begins.
You’ll have the opportunity to request tweaks or changes, and once you’re happy with the design, it will be signed off and production can begin. This step can be as quick as a few days or up to a week, depending on how many revisions are made.
3. Diamond Selection (Concurrent or 1–2 weeks)
Choosing the centre stone is a key part of the process. You may opt for a natural or lab grown diamond, and the final choice will depend on your budget, carat preference, and what characteristics matter most to you; like brilliance, shape, or ethical origin.
At Hatton Garden Diamond, we offer a variety of GIA-certified and IGI-certified lab grown diamonds, giving you peace of mind in both value and quality.
Please note – If you’re sourcing a rare cut or size, this may add extra time to the process.
4. Crafting the Ring (3–4 weeks)
Once the design and diamond have been confirmed, your ring will be made by hand by experienced artisans right here at Hatton Garden Diamond.
This part of the journey can take several weeks, as it involves setting the stone, polishing, and final checks to ensure the ring meets the highest standards of finish and craftsmanship.
Some rings may take longer, especially if they include intricate detailing or additional gemstones. We can discuss this with you at your consultation.
5. Final Review and Collection (Up to 1 week)
Once complete, you’ll have the chance to see the ring and make sure that everything looks and feels right. At this stage, minor adjustments can be made if needed (such as resizing). Once approved, your ring is boxed, ready for you to pop the question!
How Far In Advance Should You Buy A Custom Engagement Ring?
To give yourself plenty of time, it’s best to begin the process at least 2 to 3 months before your intended proposal date. This allows for the full design and creation timeline, plus some breathing room in case of unexpected delays.
If your proposal date is fixed, say, Christmas, an anniversary or a trip abroad, it’s wise to allow even more time. You’ll thank yourself later for avoiding a last-minute rush.
Tight Turnaround?
Some bespoke engagement rings can be made in less time, depending on the design and stone availability. If you’re working on a tighter timeline, the team here at Hatton Garden Diamond may be able to offer suggestions to speed up the process, such as modifying an existing design or selecting a pre-sourced diamond. However, creating a ring from scratch is a meaningful process, and allowing enough time is always recommended to get it just right.
