Prince Harry and Meghan Markle publicly announced their engagement yesterday, with the happy couple smiling for the cameras amongst the stunning backdrop of Kensington Palace’s Sunken Garden. Markle, an American actress and philanthropist, was introduced to Prince Harry by mutual friends and dated for about a year and a half before becoming engaged this month. The engagement has been a hot topic amongst the public, with much attention focused on the ring, which holds great significance to the pair.
Designed by Prince Harry himself, this beautiful three stone ring contains something old and something new. Bearing three glittering diamonds, the ring’s center stone comes from Botswana, a place where Harry frequently travelled to when he was younger and where he and Markle got to spend time away privately. Sitting either side sit two smaller diamonds, which are from Princess Diana’s personal collection and hold great sentimental value. The diamonds are then tied together with a yellow gold band, apparently a favourite of Markle, creating a truly personal and priceless engagement ring. In an interview with BBC on Monday, Prince Harry described the ring,
“The ring is obviously yellow gold because that’s (Markle’s) favorite and the main stone itself is sourced from Botswana and the little diamonds either side are from my mother’s jewelry collection to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together.”
When asked about the ring, Markle replied, “It’s incredibly special to be able to have this, which sort of links where you come from and Botswana, which is important to us, and it’s perfect.”
